The district has many places of statutory importance, including two top European designated sites (Special Areas of Conservation), 3 Sites of Special Scientific Interest, many Local Nature Reserves, sites of protected or endangered species and sites of biological importance as well as the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Green Belt.

What is biodiversity?

The term biodiversity refers to the variety of all living things: from the simplest one celled organism through to Humans. Biodiversity includes all species from the extremely rare to the most common. It also includes genetic variety within individual species.

 

Why is it important to conserve Biodiversity?

The Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006 places a legal duty on all public organisation to have regard to the maintainence and enhancement of biodiversity in exercising all their functions.
