A community book about Hednesford Park and War Memorial is now available to purchase thanks to the help of park users – past and present.

`From Pools to Park and Play!` has been created by Cannock Chase Council in partnership with Inspiring healthy lifestyles, and captures local memories about the park and War Memorial in a fun and interactive way.

Schoolchildren from a number of local primary schools have taken part in various creative workshops to produce the visual elements that have been used to tell the story of the park over the years.

The book includes a variety of activities that can be enjoyed by all the family. It also includes a DVD showing local people sharing their personal memories of the park.

An online history book is also available which combines the detailed history with the audio of those individuals featured in the film.

Councillor Christine Mitchell, Leader of Culture and Sport said: “This initiative has provided a fantastic opportunity to document the history of the park and War Memorial and has provided a lasting legacy for future generations to enjoy. It`s not your typical history book; instead it is full of facts and anecdotal memories from those who have used the park over the years.

“I would like to congratulate all those involved and urge people to pick up a copy when visiting the park”.

Lisa Shephard, Creative Development manager for Inspiring healthy lifestyles, said: “This has been a brilliant creative project which has brought our community together to celebrate our local heritage. I would like to thank the local schools for being involved in this special project”.

An official book launch took place this week to celebrate the completion of this project and to thank all those involved.

The book is available to purchase for £4.50 from the main Council offices in Cannock. It can also be ordered over the telephone by calling the Council on 01543 462621.

Alternatively, copies can be purchased from the Museum of Cannock Chase, the Parlour in Hednesford Park and the Prince of Wales Centre.

This initiative has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the ongoing redevelopment works of Hednesford Park which started in 2013.
