Shutters of empty units in Cannock Town Centre due to have a makeover

Shutters in Cannock Town Centre

Published: Thursday 02nd July 2020 | 11.39am

A number of Council owned roller shutter doors in Cannock Town Centre are due to be transformed into works of art this summer, as part of a range of environmental improvements in and around the town centre.

The Council is working with a professional spray artist to produce pieces of art on 14 shutters, including seven opposite St. Luke’s Church and seven on vacant shops by the Beecroft Road subway underpass.

The Council is now seeking ideas and images from local community groups which reflect the local area that could be incorporated into the final designs. Ideas need to be sent to communications@cannockchasedc.gov.uk by no later than Friday 24 July.

The professional artist will use these ideas to come up with the overall design theme for each shutter.

In February, the Council’s Cabinet approved to spend £94,000 on environmental improvements in Cannock Town Centre.

Other improvements include a comprehensive painting scheme, improving the exterior of appearance of the Prince of Wales Theatre and updating display cabinets around the town.

The Council aims for the town centre improvements to be completed to coincide with the opening of McArthurGlen Designer Outlet West Midlands in autumn 2020, with the exception of the Prince of Wales Theatre. This will take longer to complete due to planning permission and obtaining necessary consents.

Councillor Gordon Alcott, Leader for Town Centre Regeneration, said: “This will be an exciting project and it is hoped the new artworks will improve the ambience of the town centre.

“We want to make sure that the existing town centre looks as welcoming as it can, with a predicted growth of 3 to 4 million visitors per annum due to visit the new Designer Outlet Village. We are hoping a large proportion of these visitors will come to the town centre and see what is on offer locally”.
