Cannock Chase Council has removed the boardwalk in Rugeley Town Centre for Health and Safety reasons.

The boardwalk between Brook Square and Albion Street was closed in October 2018 on safety grounds and has remained closed until this time.

In early 2019 the Council appointed consultants to conduct a survey on the boardwalk, the survey results showed that the structure was unsafe and beyond repair.

Work has been undertaken by contractors over the last couple of weeks with action taken to remove the structure, install fencing and a lockable gate, making the area safe and secure.

Councillor Gordon Alcott, Deputy Leader and Town Centre Regeneration Portfolio Leader said “We have taken the advice of specialist consultants and have made the area safe by removing the existing boardwalk structure.

“We are keen to look forward and I have asked officers to commission specialists to progress the necessary technical work to come up with design options for a replacement scheme which will re-establish this pedestrian link”

Design options and cost proposals will be presented to Cabinet in early 2020.
