Authorities are continuing to monitor a waste fire site in Slitting Mill after stacks were capped with soil.

Cannock Chase District Council, Staffordshire County Council and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service are conducting regular monitoring of Oak Tree Farm to ensure the site remains safe.

This includes air testing for asbestos, which has revealed no cause for concern. These results, coupled with the air quality monitoring results from Cannock Chase District Council, means that there are no discernible risks to public health.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service are continuing to monitor the site of the capped waste fire at Oak Tree Farm. This monitoring will include scans of all areas of the stack using thermal imaging cameras and the repair of any areas of the cap that have subsided.

Visits to the site confirm that small areas of combustion remain but that the smoke issuing from the stack is significantly reduced.

Staffordshire County Council, the Environment Agency and Cannock Chase District Council are also continuing to regularly visit the site to make sure no further waste is being accepted.

Adam Lines, Environment Manager with the Environment Agency said “We are also contacting local waste carriers who may have used the site in the past asking them to take waste to alternative legal waste sites. We are continuing to work with partners to carry out any necessary monitoring of the area now and in the future.”

Daily air monitoring results continue to be constantly low and are published on Cannock Chase Council’s website www.cannockchasedc.gov.uk/slittingmill Requests for hard copies can be made by calling 01543 462621.
