Introduction

Cannock Chase Council is committed to equality, diversity and social inclusion. On these pages you will be able to find all the latest news and information on our equality and diversity work.

We are working to make Cannock Chase a place that is guided by a number of principles including treating everyone with equality and valuing diversity.

Through the Council's policies and service delivery the Council's main aims for equality and diversity are to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination
  • Promote equality of opportunity
  • Promote good relations between diverse communities

Definitions of Equality and Diversity

Equality is about recognising that everybody is different yet treating everyone with an equal level of respect. It means ensuring equality of opportunity and providing equal access to employment, education or training, goods, services and facilities.

Diversity is about recognising, respecting and valuing the positive aspects of differences.  Treating everyone as an individual means appreciating each person's skills, ideas, perspectives and experiences and meeting their needs.

Discrimination is treating a person, without a justification, less favourably than another, particularly because of one's feelings, assumptions or prejudices about the characteristics, attributes or circumstances of that person. This can include certain forms of harassment or abuse.

As part of our ongoing commitment to Equality and Diversity, the Council's Equality and Diversity Policy is currently being revised and will be available on this page in due course.

The Equality Act 2010

The Equality Act 2010 brings together nine separate pieces of legislation into one single Act simplifying the law and strengthening it in important ways to tackle discrimination and inequality. Everyone is protected by law from discrimination and are covered by equality and diversity guidelines regarding nine protected characteristics. Further information on The Equality Act can be found on the following page.
