Cannock Chase Council

Allocations Policy

Joining the Council Register

The local authority has an allocations policy to help households who are in the greatest housing need.

The Council operates a Choice Based Lettings system as part of the Southern Staffordshire and Northern Warwickshire Uchoosehomes Choice Based Lettings scheme.  Full details of how the scheme is implemented is available in the document 'Somewhere to Live'.

When a property becomes available, it is advertised on the UChoosehomes website and in the local free newspapers and Council offices.

Applicants who meet the needs criteria can express their interest in the property.  How to express interest is explained in the leaflet entitled 'How to Express an Interest in a Property'.  The person who is in the highest band and who has been in that band for the longest will be offered the opportunity to take up the tenancy.

If you are a new Council tenant, you will be given an "Introductory Tenancy". This lasts for one year. If there are no problems with the tenancy, e.g. the rent is paid and all other tenancy conditions are met, it will become a "secure" tenancy at the end of the 12 month period.

If you are an existing secure or assured tenant of any council or housing association, you will be given a secure tenancy.

The Letting Standard

Cannock Chase Council will carry out necessary repairs to empty properties to a standard which ensures they are fit for immediate occupation.  All properties will be left in a safe, clean and tidy condition.  Where work can be carried out with the minimum inconvenience to the new tenant, that work will be completed after occupation.

The Letting Standard aims to ensure that all properties are offered to prospective tenants in a condition which allows immediate occupation.  The process will ensure that safety issues are not compromised whilst also ensuring that the property remains empty for the shortest time possible.
