Cannock Chase Council

Choice Based Lettings

Step by Step Guide

UChoosehomes is a partnership between local authorities and housing associations covering the Lichfield district, Cannock Chase district, North Warwickshire, Rugby and Nuneaton and Bedworth and provides an allocation scheme which will give people more choice and more control over where they live.

 Q. What is UChoose?

A. UChoosehomes is the new Choice Based Lettings Scheme which has been designed to improve access to affordable rented properties in the Cannock Chase area. The Council has also joined forces with eight other local authorities and three registered landlords in the Southern Staffordshire and Northern Warwickshire area. This means that we can offer a choice of properties in a wider choice of areas.

Q. How does it work?

A. Available properties to rent are advertised on a regular basis and customers can express an interest in them through a website or by telephone.

Q. Who can apply to join?

          A. Anyone over the age of 18 can apply to register onto the UChoose scheme.

Q. How do I apply for UChoose?

A. We will ask you to complete an application online. You will be given a registration number and a password to access the online service.

Q. What happens next?

A. Your application will be assessed and your priority calculated and you will be placed into one of four priority bands. You will be told of the decision by letter or email. If you disagree with the assessment, you will be able to appeal.

Q. What are priority bands?

A. Priority bands means we can target those with the greatest housing need, while still allowing other people to apply for re-housing. All customers are assessed on their housing need and placed into one of four priority bands:

Band 1 Plus
for those who are statutory homeless and have another recognised band 1 housing need

Band 1
for those in urgent housing need

Band 2
for those with intermediate need for re-housing

Band 3
for those with some housing need

Band 4
for applicants from outside of the Cannock Chase District and those with reduced preference.
