The local authority provides services to investigate and deal with Air pollution from most sources;
Smoke from chimneys of domestic properties.
Smoke from most industrial chimneys although some processes are regulated by the Environment Agency.
Smoke from bonfires on domestic, commercial and industrial land.
Fumes, odours and dust from all sources except those regulated by the Environment Agency.

The whole of Cannock Chase district is covered by smoke control areas which control the emission of smoke from chimneys or buildings.
Fuels that can be burned on approved fireplaces need to be 'authorised fuels'. A list of 'authorised fuels' is available using via the following link:

This affectively means that coal and logs can only be burned on fireplaces that are 'exempt appliances'. A list of 'Exempt appliances' is available using the following link:

Bonfires
Domestic bonfires should not be "a nuisance" and the frequency and duration would need to be assessed.
Bonfires on commercial / Industrial premises are not allowed as waste must be disposed of at a site licensed o receive the waste.
Smoky Diesels
Extremely smoky lorries and buses can contribute significantly to poor air quality. These vehicles can be reported to the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA). VOSA will contact the vehicle operator and investigate the report.
The local Intelligence Officer in your area can be contacted via email: enquiries@vosa.gov.uk - alternatively ring the VOSA Enquiry Unit via their National Number (0300 123 9000). You may be required to complete a reporting form, which can be accessed via Smoky Vehicle Report Form (PDF) / Smoky Vehicle Report Form (Word). The basic information you should provide is:
• The vehicle registration number (displayed on the number plate)
• The type of vehicle (be as specific as possible)
• The date, time and place where you saw the vehicle, and if possible,
• The name of the vehicles operator (the company or owner)
