Taxi safety in the spotlight over the festive season
Published on Wednesday 14th December 2011
Taxi Wardens will be in Cannock Town Centre over Christmas and New Year to make sure that festive revellers get home safely.
Clearly identifiable in high visibility jackets, the trained and accredited wardens will provide a safe environment for people queuing for licensed taxis at the High Green rank in Cannock. They will be linked by radio to the Council's CCTV operators and to local police officers from Staffordshire Police.
The wardens will be on duty in Cannock Town Centre between 11pm and 3am on the following dates in December - Friday 16th, Saturday 17th, Friday 23rd, Saturday 24th, Monday 26th and Saturday 31st.
As part of a safety initiative, Cannock Chase Council has also urged revellers to make sure they use licensed taxis and private hire vehicles over the festive season.
Taxis can drive around the town centres looking for customers whilst private hired vehicles have to be pre-booked.
The Council is encouraging the public to make sure they only use vehicles and drivers that are licensed. A licensed vehicle will display a licence plate which will include the licensing authority, the licence number, how many passengers it can carry and the vehicle registration number. A licensed driver will wear an identity badge which will show the driver's photograph, licence number and licensing authority details.
Cllr Janos Toth, Deputy Leader of Cannock Chase Council and Leader of the Environment, said:
"The Taxi Wardens will ensure a safe environment for people waiting for taxis by minimising unnecessary disputes and unacceptable behaviour.
The dangers of getting into an unlicensed taxi can not be underestimated. Using unlicensed vehicles puts you at unnecessary risk and the consequences of using bogus operators can be unpleasant and potentially dangerous".
Mike Gilmore, Passenger Transport Solutions UK Ltd, said:
"We are extremely pleased to be part of Cannock Chase Council's safety initiative and be supporting the local taxi trade. Our wardens are here to enhance the night-time experience by offering a safe drive home to all the travelling public. We are also pleased to be supporting the alcohol-related violence campaign - It's Never Ok as it is such an important message especially this time of year."
Taxi Wardens will also be supporting the Council's Christmas violence campaign - It's Never Ok and will be handing out information to passengers. Large pin badges will also be worn on their high visibility jackets to promote the key messages of the campaign.
