Hednesford Town FC help tackle alcohol-related violence

Published on Monday 19th December 2011

Footballers for Hednesford Town FC will lend their support to a campaign to tackle alcohol-related violence and domestic abuse over Christmas.

Players will warm up for their home game tomorrow evening against West Bromwich Albion and on Boxing Day against local rivals Chasetown, while wearing t-shirts carrying the campaign's 'It's Never OK' message.

Cannock Chase Community Safety Partnership is spreading the message in response to seasonal incidences of domestic abuse and alcohol-related violence which traditionally increase over the festive period.

As well as getting high flying Hednesford Town FC on-side, the partnership have also recruited bar staff, taxi wardens and takeaways to challenge violent and abusive behaviour.

Cllr George Adamson, Leader of Cannock Chase Council, said: "Over the next month we want to talk to as many people as possible, to challenge this behaviour and we're pleased that Hednesford Town FC have come on-side to back the campaign.

"Last time Hednesford Town FC met West Bromwich Albion in a friendly game there were 7,000 spectators present so we're delighted that the football club let us use such a big occasion to spread the message to the Keys Park crowd."

Hednesford Town FC Club Secretary, Terry McMahon, said: "It is important for a community club such as Hednesford Town FC to not shy away from social issues, we're therefore more than happy to be able to support this campaign."

Hednesford Town FC are currently lying in third place in the Evo-Stik League Northern Premier, equal on points with Northwich Victoria in second and have reached the quarter finals of both the BCFA Senior Cup and the Staffordshire Senior Cup.

They will face Premier League opposition in both tournaments, with tomorrow night's home tie against West Bromwich Albion in the BCFA Senior Cup to be followed by a home game against Stoke City in the Staffordshire Senior Cup in the New Year.

Hednesford Town FC v. West Bromwich Albion kicks off at 7.45pm on Tuesday 20 December at Keys Park. The home fixture against Chasetown FC kicks off at 3pm on Monday 26 December.
