More top-class facilities for Chase Leisure Centre

More top-class facilities will be ready for the public at Chase Leisure Centre in early August, with swimmers having to wait just a little bit longer to dive into the centre’s modernised swimming pool

Cannock Chase Council has been working with contractor GF Tomlinson on a £6 million redevelopment of the leisure centre in Cannock that got under way in April last year. Despite the major construction project, all facilities bar the swimming pools have been open to the public over the course of the works.

A state-of-the-art Profiles Health and Fitness Centre opened in February and early next month more brand new facilities will be ready, including an air-conditioned fitness and dance studio, modernised changing rooms, showers and toilets for the ground-floor sports hall, a community function room, three new treatment rooms and a new cafe.

New swimming facilities will also be delivered as part of the modernisation, including a main pool with moveable floor, and new changing areas. These were due to be ready in early August but further works and testing need to be carried out to the main pool, meaning a small delay for swimmers before everything is ready.

Cllr Christine Mitchell, Cannock Chase Council Culture and Sport Leader, said: "The modernisation of Chase Leisure Centre is entering its final phase now and I'd like to thank centre users for their patience over the last 12 months or so. I hope they agree that the facility we're delivering is absolutely superb. The fitness suite has been a huge success and we hope the public are as equally impressed with the other facilities that will be ready early in August. I hope swimmers can bear with us for a little while longer before they get the chance to use the new swimming facilities - they'll definitely be worth the wait."

Cannock Chase Council's leisure and culture facilities are managed by charitable trust WLCT in a new partnership that was launched earlier this year.

Stuart Murray, Chief Executive of WLCT, said: "Since April more than 30,000 people have exercised in the new Profiles Health and Fitness Centre - an increase of 300 per cent compared to the same three-month period in 2011. It's a great success story. When the new pool opens and work on the site is completed this will be a wonderful leisure facility."
