About your Local Museum
The Museum was established in 1989 by Cannock Chase District Council as a Museum serving the Chase area, and seeks to increase access to Culture and Heritage within the Cannock District which includes Cannock, Hednesford and Rugeley.
In 1993, the museum achieved fully Registered status. The Registration standards are set by the Museums and Galleries Commission. To meet these, the museum demonstrated a commitment to good collections care, management and public service.
In 2009, the museum applied for the new MLA Accreditation scheme which replaced the Registration scheme. The new scheme covers all aspects of the museum, including management, collections, visitor services and facilities. The museum was awarded Accredited status in September 2009, with a special Commendation for the way it consults with its visitors.
We have also been awarded the Sandford Award for Heritage Education three times, and the Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme award on a number of occasions.
Our mission statement is:
"To give residents of, and visitors to, Cannock Chase district both a 'sense of place' and the opportunity to actively partake in the preservation and exploration of the area's cultural heritage"
The museum also has its own Friends organisation which welcomes new members. The Friends hold a busy calendar of events each year, as well as supporting the museum through volunteer work and awareness raising.
The museum aims to provide the highest levels of customer care to our visitors. We are a small, friendly team, and aim to greet visitors individually and help them get the most out of their visit, according to their individual requirements.
