Exhibitions Programme
As well as permanent displays about the local area, coal mining, social history and toys & games from the past, the museum also hosts an exciting and ever-changing temporary exhibition programme throughout the year
The programme of exhibitions provides the opportunity to view the work of both local and well-known international artists. Below are just some of the exhibitions we have on show this year.
Exhibitions 2010 .... coming up...
July 31st - September 12th 2010 - Painted Tales
Artist Sue Prince is passionate about the landscape and the rural way of life and makes connections between people and the environment through pictures and storytelling.
Inspired by Swedish folk art, her highly unusual works are pictorial stories about the rural and natural environment, created in egg tempera on linen and canvas. Sue has exhibited her work all over the world to great acclaim. Thought-provoking, fascinating and beautifully created, this unique exhibition is not to be missed!
September 18th - October 29th 2010 - Cannock Chase Open Art Exhibition 2010
Calling all artists living in the Cannock Chase district! Here is your opportunity to submit your art work for display in the museum exhibition gallery. To celebrate the museum's birthday, this year's theme is 'Celebrations & Commemorations'. Whether it is painting, drawing, needlework, crafts, ceramics or sculpture, why not contact the museum to find out how to enter your work? All work chosen for display can be offered for sale. A partnership project with Cannock Chase Council Arts Development.
Submissions will be accepted on 11th, 12th and 13th September between 11am and 3pm . Please contact the museum for an entry form.
November 8th - December 17th 2010 - Portraits from the Coalfields
A visually stunning exhibition exploring the impact of the pit closure programme on two former coalfield regions. In 1993, photographer Luke Unsworth visited Littleton Colliery to record its last day. In 2008 he returned to discover what happened to the site and its miners during the past 15 years. To mark the 25th anniversary of the start of the 1984/5 miners' strike, photographer Andy Boag took ex-miners back to the sites of their former collieries in Yorkshire to explore their memories of the industry during this momentous period. Both projects provide a powerful reminder of how rapidly the physical traces of the coal industry may have disappeared but its legacy continues to live on.
