Friends of Cannock Chase

Our History and Objectives

» View pages in this section

For many years Cannock Chase has been under serious threat of encroachment from several quarters. In response to this the original Friends of Cannock Chase were formed in 1934 largely under the sponsorship of the late Mac Wright a well-known local historian and journalist.

Following the second world war Cannock Chase came under severe pressure from the Services. This led in November 1947 to the formation of the present Association, mainly due to the enthusiasm of Dr. Peter Jennings.

Our Objectives

  • To preserve the unique character of Cannock Chase for the use of the public.
  • To guard against encroachment by industrial and residential development.
  • To promote the cause of conservation with special reference to management of woodland, heathland and wetland areas.
  • To liaise with County and District Councils, Forestry Commission and local land owners in matters directly affecting Cannock Chase.
  • To liaise with other conservation and amenity bodies.
