Slipper Swap Shops off to a Flying Start
Published: Thursday 6th November 2008
This year’s first Slipper Swap Shop in Cannock Chase district has been a huge success, with more than 200 elderly residents trading in their old slippers for a brand new pair, completely free of charge
Old and ill-fitting slippers can be dangerous and are frequently the cause of trips and falls for the elderly. Anyone aged 60 and over who lives in the Cannock Chase district can pop along to a Swap Shop to exchange an old pair of slippers.
As well as the slippers, residents had a cup of tea or coffee and got a wide range of information from the agencies that make up the Chase Community Partnership, including Cannock Chase Council, Staffordshire Police, Chase Council for Voluntary Services and the Primary Care Trust.
Additionally, representatives from the local pensions service checked whether elderly residents were getting the full range of benefits they are entitled to, especially the Winter Fuel Allowance and the Pension Credit.
Cllr. John Jillings, Safer and Stronger Communities Leader Cannock Chase Council, said
"Chase Community Partnership is all about Cannock Chase Council and different agencies working together to offer services for our residents - and the Slipper Swap Shop is a great example of this. A brand new pair of slippers for the over-60s will help to cut down on the number of trips and falls.
"And the added advice they receive at the events can be invaluable, especially when it comes to getting all the benefits they're entitled to. It was very pleasing to see so many residents attending this week's Swap Shop and I hope many more attend the three other events we have got lined up over the next few weeks."
Chase Council for Voluntary Service (Chase CVS) have supported this year's Slipper Swap Shops and they deal with many issues concerning the district's elderly residents. Kent Parson, the chief executive of Chase CVS, said
"This is a vital contribution to reducing the falls and accidents that may be experienced by the elderly throughout the district and we are pleased to be involved with the initiative."
The next Slipper Swap Shop is at St Luke's Church Hall, Mill Street, Cannock, on Tuesday, November 11 from 9am to 1pm. Events will then be held on Thursday, November 20 at Norton Canes Community Centre from 2pm to 5pm, and on Wednesday, November 26 at Our Lady of Lourdes Community Centre in Hednesford from 1pm to 4pm.
