Alcohol misuse - young people

Respect Alcohol

Respect Alcohol

Don't let this be you!

The Chase Community Partnership have launched an alcohol and substance misuse campaign - 'Respect Alcohol' to raise awareness of the risks associated with alcohol consumption amongst young people aged 11 to 16 years old.

Evidence shows that young people are often assoicated with anti-social behaviour and disorder issues when under the influence of alcohol. There are also links between alcohol misuse, low educational achievement and adult criminal behaviour.

The campaign addresses social norms/perceptions associated with alcohol and substance misuse. The key areas include:

Physical - getting into a fight

Appearance - how alcohol affects the way you look

Sexual behaviour

Getting home after a night out

Photographic evidence - long-term impact

Access to alcohol - where do you get it from?

Death - hospital admissions

The campaign material has been developed with the help of students from Fair Oak Academy and Hagley Park Academy. All the models featured are part of Backstreet Theatre Company. Scenes have been reconstructed to represent real life situations.

If you are a young person and worried about your drinking, contact T3 Young Persons Substance Misuse Service on 01785 241393 or email

The campaign also questions parental responsibility by asking parents 'do you let your child drink?'.

The campaign has been supported by Staffordshire T3, Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire County Council's Young People's Service. It has been funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner's Locality Deal Fund.

For more information about this campaign contact the Partnerships Team on 01543 464435.

Alcohol Facts

A survey was conducted in schools across Staffordshire where young people were asked about their drinking habits in an attempt to understand how they obtain and use alcohol, as well as their perceptions of drunkenness and associated behaviours.

79% of young people said they found it very or fairly easy to obtain alcohol, and 61% said they had it provided by their parents. Some young people said they sourced alcohol from friends or other people buying it for them. 6% of young people stated they brought it themselves from an off license, and 2% buying alcohol from a supermarket.

Staffordshire Trading Standards carried out 13 test purchases in Cannock Chase in 2011/12 with 3 illegal sales detected. This highlights that schemes such as ‘Challenge 25’ are effective, but illegal sales are still occurring.

83% of young people confirmed that they consumed alcohol at home or at someone else’s house. 9% confirmed they consumed alcohol on the street, in a park or somewhere else outside.

One in ten young people identified that through consuming alcohol they had become involved in an argument or a fight, with 3% stating they had got into trouble with the Police.

This evidence would suggest that alcohol amongst young people is prevalent. Whilst licensing seems to be effective in preventing sales to young people, the majority find it relatively easy to get hold of alcohol.

Alcohol related hospital admissions for males of all ages is below the national average however, the rate for females is above. It is thought that more than 20% of adults in Cannock Chase regularly binge drink and the district has 7% high risk drinkers, which is similar to the regional rate. Over a 3 year period there has been 75 alcohol related admissions in people under 18 in Cannock Chase with rates being higher than the England average.
