Civic Leaders across the United Kingdom have been asked to plant a tree to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

The date chosen, Friday 11 March, is the seventieth day of the year in which The Queen marks the seventieth anniversary of her accession.

The Tree Planting Day is part of the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

The National Association of Civic Officers (NACO), who initiated the Tree Planting Day, will prepare a bound book of the names of the Councils which took part in the day, which will be sent to The Queen.

The Chairman of the Council, Councillor Doug Smith represented Cannock Chase and planted a Lebanon Cedar at Cannock Park today.

Councillor Doug Smith said “I am honoured to represent the District and plant a tree to mark The Queen’s Jubilee on the seventieth day of 2022.  We are lucky that Cannock Chase is surrounded by green spaces.  Trees can help to improve our environment as they naturally absorb CO2.  They provide homes for wildlife and help improve our mental health making us happier and healthier.  The tree planted today will be enjoyed by generations to come.”

The tree, Lebanon Cedar is native to Lebanon, but planted widely in Europe and North America.  It will grow to over 30 metres at maturity. A plaque to mark the occasion will be cemented next to the tree, at a later date.
