The Coronation takes place on Saturday 6 May in Westminster Abbey and will be part of a packed weekend of events. HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, became King Charles III the moment his mother Queen Elizabeth II died on 8 September, but this will be an occasion to mark the new after the mourning of the former Queen. The Coronation will also see the crowning of Her Majesty The Queen Consort.
“Their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort hope the Coronation Weekend will provide an opportunity to spend time and celebrate with friends, families, and communities across the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth”.
On Sunday 7 May the nation is invited to take part in The Big Lunch where many communities are set to hold street parties around lunchtime. The Queen Consort has been a patron of the Big Lunch inititative since 2013. The palace hopes thousands of events will take place in streets, gardens, and parks in every corner of the UK. In the evening, The Coronation Concert will take place at Windsor Castle, with performances from musicians and actors as well as an appearance from the Coronation Choir, which is formed of amateur singers and minority community groups. The party will be broadcast live on BBC 1.
Monday 7 May will be a Bank Holiday. The day has been set aside for volunteering and is being billed as The Big Help Out. The organisation of the day is being handled by The Scouts, the Royal Voluntary Service, and faith groups, with the aim of highlighting the positive impact of volunteering. Many organisations will be using the day to undertake volunatry projects in their own communities.

Prince Charles visits Cannock in 1977
The last time King Charles visited the District was in 1977 when he came to Cannock on behalf of the late Queen to mark her Silver Jubilee. He was guest of honour at the town's Flower Festival, centred on St Luke's Church, and visited the town centre where he was met by thousands of people. A fascinating video is available on YouTube which you can see at: Watch Prince Charles at Cannock's Flower Festival in 1977. Thank you to Jayne Anne Strutt for sharing it.
The video is a key part of the District's social history and for those who were there at the time, you may recognise yourself or know somebody who was present, or even played a part in organising the festival or the visit.
