Cannock Chase councillors have appointed fellow Councilllor, David Williams, to be the Council’s Armed Forces Champion for the remainder of the 2023/24 Council year.
Councillor Williams, a forces veteran, was chosen at last Wednesday’s Council meeting (12 July). His responsibilities include encouraging local communities to support the armed forces in their areas, helping to create public understanding among the public of issues affecting the armed forces community, recognising and remembering the sacrifices made by the community, and encouraging activities to help integrate the community into local life.
Conversely, the Armed Forces Champion also exists to encourage the armed forces community to help and support the wider community.
Councillor Williams succeeds Councillor Martyn Buttery who served during 2022/23. In future the role will be appointed to at the Annual Council Meeting held each May, alongside represenatives appointed to various outside bodies.
Councillors praised the contribution made by Councillor Buttery during the past year, which included the Council receiving the silver award for its commitment to the armed forces community as part of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.
A delighted Councillor Williams said of his appointment: “The armed forces covenant represents a commitment by society to support and honour those who serve or have served in the military and their families, and I will ensure that the Council upholds this commitment, ensuring that veterans, service members, and their families receive the support they need.
“There is a clear need for this role, and I look forward to being a `bridge` between the Council and the community on issues we have responsibility for, such as housing, benefits and employment support.
“As a former Royal Marine, I will be a good advocate for the armed forces and their relationships with residents, businesses, community groups and partner organisations. I have previously delivered work within a large public organisation to support the armed forces and to foster collaboration and partnership. I will bring this learning to the Council.”
Cannock Chase has been a signatory to the Armed Forces Community Covenant for Staffordshire for the past decade, first signing up to it during the 2012/13 Council year.
