The demolition of Cannock’s outdated multi-storey car park (MSCP) is officially underway, marking a major step forward in the town centre’s regeneration.
The car park which closed in 2019 is now being carefully dismantled following months of intensive preparatory work. Visible progress is now being made on site, as heavy machinery begins to bring down the decades-old structure level by level.
Whilst much of the progress isn’t visible from ground level, all three towers have now been removed, including the safe removal of asbestos located above the lift shaft.
The top level of the MSCP has been almost entirely dismantled, leaving only the structural beams in place. Excavators currently working on the top floor are expected to move down one level this week, with demolition of the floor below scheduled to begin by the end of the week.
The MSCP in Cannock town centre was originally constructed in 1977 and served the busy market town for many years. However, it was closed in August 2019 due to concerns about its structural integrity.
Before demolition could begin, the glass canopy had to be removed to allow for the installation of scaffolding. Utility disconnections and detailed surveys revealed extensive asbestos, which had to be removed safely and in accordance with regulations. In addition to asbestos, the contractor also had to clear significant amounts of pigeon guano and other hazardous waste, including discarded sharps.
Councillor Maureen Freeman, Portfolio Leader for Regeneration and High Streets said: “We announced the MSCP’s demolition back in January following the granting of planning permission. While it may seem like little has happened on site, a great deal of preparatory work has been taking place behind the scenes. It great to finally see the structure finally coming down whilst ensuring that it is done safety.”
The full demolition of the MSCP is expected to be completed by October 2025.
The leader Tony Johnson has been holding talks with major developers and investors around the Council’s regeneration plans, and there has been significant interest in Cannock town centre.
