Cannock Chase Council has officially adopted the Cannock Chase Local Plan 2018–2040, following approval at Full Council on Monday 23 March.

This marks the completion of a major long term project that has shaped the district’s planning framework for years to come.

The adoption follows seven years of work involving detailed evidence gathering, multiple rounds of public engagement and a thorough independent examination.

With an adopted Local Plan in place, the district now benefits from a secure five year housing land supply for the first time since 2023. This will give communities greater clarity and reduce the risk of speculative development. The district has also avoided significantly higher housing requirements, which would have applied without an up to date plan.

Garry Samuels, Portfolio Leader for Regeneration and High Streets, said: “The adopted Local Plan gives us a clear and sustainable direction through to 2040. It ensures that development goes in the most appropriate locations, supports employment and investment, safeguards our remaining Green Belt, and protects our natural, cultural and historic assets. It also helps us take meaningful steps towards responding to climate change.

“The scale of work behind this Plan cannot be understated. Members, officers, partners, developers, neighbouring authorities, residents, businesses and many local organisations have all played a part over the last seven years.

“Thanks to this shared effort, we have a strong plan that puts well planned, infrastructure led development at the forefront and meets the needs of our district.”
