Cannock Chase Council has approved plans to redevelop Cotswold Road Play Area in Hednesford, paving the way for a modern, inclusive and accessible play space for local children and families.

The scheme, which will be funded through £143,520 of Section 106 developer contributions, will see the ageing play area completely refurbished as part of the Council's ongoing investment in parks and green spaces across the district.

Located in the Pye Green area of Hednesford, Cotswold Road Play Area was last fully refurbished in 1996. While some individual items of equipment have been replaced over the years, much of the site has now reached the end of its lifespan and no longer meets the needs of today's communities.

The approved plans will deliver a modern play environment designed to encourage active play, improve accessibility and create a welcoming community space for residents of all ages.

Improvements will include:
•    Modernisation of the existing junior and toddler play area
•    Installation of new, safer play surfacing throughout the site
•    Enhanced access and boundary features to improve safety and security
•    New benches, bins and cycle parking facilities
•    Improved accessibility and inclusivity to ensure more children can enjoy the space

The project supports the Council's commitment to improving health and wellbeing, encouraging outdoor activity and maintaining attractive parks and green spaces for local communities.

Councillor John Parkes, Portfolio Leader for Operational Services and Parks, said: "We are delighted to be moving forward with the refurbishment of Cotswold Road Play Area. This investment will change an ageing facility into a high-quality, inclusive play space that local families can enjoy for many years to come.

"Access to safe, attractive and accessible places to play is incredibly important for children's health, wellbeing and development. This project will help ensure that children and families in Pye Green have a modern facility right on their doorstep."

Cotswold Road Play Area is one of a number of sites being improved through Cannock Chase Council's multi-year parks improvement programme.

Hednesford Town Council has welcomed the plans and has worked closely with Cannock Chase Council throughout the development of the proposals.

Subject to the necessary procurement and project delivery processes, work is expected to be completed during the 2026/27 financial year, with the new play area anticipated to be open by March 2027.
