Officers from Cannock Chase Council visited hundreds of businesses over the Easter bank holiday weekend to check that those required to be closed were complying with the law.

Across the District officers visited places including shops, restaurants, gyms, nail bars, pubs, hotels, hair salons, playgrounds, cafes, churches, betting shops, tattooists, and car showrooms and none of them were found to be open illegally.

Council Officers were also on hand to give advice and support to places that are allowed to remain open including takeaways and certain shops.

Councillor George Adamson, Leader of the Council said“I am so grateful to our residents and businesses who are following the guidelines and putting public safety first.  It is the small minority who are flouting the rules are putting themselves, and more importantly, other people at risk.  Although we know it's a very worrying time for local businesses, right now the most important thing is for people to stay at home to reduce the spread of the virus and to help protect the NHS and save lives.”

The Environmental Health Officer leading the operation added “Last week we were forced to close two pubs that had put profit before public health so it was brilliant to find everywhere closed this weekend.”

The Council will continue these operations as well as respond to complaints about places being open contrary to the regulations.  Complaints can be made by email to environmentalhealth@cannockchasedc.gov.uk or by telephone on 01543 462621.
