A major re-development scheme in Cannock town centre has reached an important milestone with the submission of a planning application to Cannock Chase Council.

The applicant is seeking planning permission for a development on the corner of Avon Road and Hunter Road on land currently used for public car parking.  The proposal will include a 33-bed care home over three storeys.  Each floor will accommodate a nursing facility, alongside bedrooms, a shared dining room, quiet room and lounge. With associated car parking and landscaping to the site and will potentially create up to 100 jobs.

Cabinet agreed in September 2020 to dispose of land at the Avon Road car park site.   The site was earmarked as a development opportunity in the Cannock Town Centre Development Prospectus.

The Council has agreed to sell the site to Midlands based developer, Deeley Properties, who have a track record of delivering residential, industrial and mixed use developments, and the sale is conditional on the site purchaser securing planning consent for the proposed scheme.

An outline planning application has been submitted to the Council (as local planning authority) by Cairnwell Developments Ltd for Exemplar Health Care.   Exemplar Health Care is one of the UK’s leading providers of specialist nursing care that focuses on maximising independence and empowering those living with complex needs to live as fulfilled lives as possible.

Councillor Mike Sutherland, Portfolio Leader for District & High Street Development said, “The Council has been promoting the Avon Road car park as a development opportunity for a number of years, and it is pleasing to see that progress is being made with the proposed re-development scheme, which should create benefits for the local community and help to support our wider ambitions for the town centre.”

Eleanor Deeley, Joint Managing Director of the Deeley Group, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Cannock Chase Council to provide much needed care facilities for the local community.

“This is a specialism that we have developed within the business over recent years, working across the country on a range of schemes, to help meet growing demand.

“Our construction division will now deliver the building on behalf of the operator, Exemplar.”

The planning application will be now be assessed by Cannock Chase Council’s planning team, with the application likely to go before the Council’s Planning Control Committee in early 2023.
