Cannock Chase Council have successfully prosecuted a Cannock man for a fly tipping.

On 28 September 2021, Melvyn Brown, of Croxley Drive, Cannock pleaded guilty to a fly tipping offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, after being seen depositing roof tiles in residents’ communal bins on Crab Lane Cannock.

Mr. Brown was originally issued with a £400 Fixed Penalty Notice, which he failed to pay, resulting in a prosecution case being taken against him for the offence.

Mr. Brown pleaded guilty to fly tipping and was fined £400 and ordered to pay costs of £400 and a victim surcharge of £40, totalling £840 by Cannock Magistrates’ Court.

Councillor Justin Johnson, Environment and Climate Change Portfolio Leader said: “The Council takes fly tipping very seriously and where witnesses are willing to provide a statement, we will act, if we have sufficient evidence.

“The Council is offering a £250 reward to anyone who provides evidence that leads to successful enforcement action against any person, business or other organisation involved in fly tipping waste in Cannock Chase District.

“We have seen an increase over the last 12 months of people putting waste into residents’ communal bins.  This means residents then can’t use the facility and the Council incurs extra costs for clearing the dumped waste.

“I would like to thank the quick-thinking witnesses that came forward in this case, allowing Officers from the Environmental Health team to trace the vehicle and take action against Mr. Brown.

“Anyone thinking of fly tipping should consider that they could have their vehicle seized, be fined, be banned from driving, and in the most serious cases, go to prison.”

Anyone who witnesses fly tipping in the District is urged to report it to Cannock Chase Council by calling 01543 462621. Key information to pass on includes:

  • The date and time of the incident
  • The model, make, registration number and colour of any vehicle used
  • A description of the offender or offenders.
