Last month marked a significant milestone for one of Staffordshire’s most iconic landmarks: Castle Ring celebrated 100 years since being designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. First listed on 30 November 1925, Castle Ring is the highest point on Cannock Chase and a treasured Iron Age hillfort offering stunning views and a glimpse into our region’s rich history.
To commemorate this anniversary, Cannock Chase Council has launched the Castle Ring Centenary Photo Trail on the Cannock Chase Can App. This fun, interactive challenge invites people of all ages to explore Castle Ring, capture 10 landmark photos of locations around the site focussed on history and wildlife and unlock points as they complete the trail. The app is free to download on iOS and Android, and the challenge can be found under the Feel Well and Naturally Well sections. It’s a great way to celebrate local heritage, learn about the site’s history and wildlife, stay active, and enjoy the outdoors.
Councillor Garry Samuels, Deputy Leader of Cannock Chase Council and Leader of Parks, Culture and Heritage, said: “Castle Ring is a jewel in the crown of Cannock Chase and an important part of our local heritage. For a century, its designation as a Scheduled Ancient Monument has helped protect this remarkable site for future generations. We’re delighted to celebrate this anniversary and encourage everyone to take part in the Castle Ring Photo Challenge. It’s a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors, learn about our history, and support wellbeing through the Cannock Chase Can initiative.”
The Council’s Countryside team works tirelessly to care for and protect Castle Ring and many other beautiful sites in the district ensuring they remain accessible, safe, wildlife-rich and preserved for generations to come. Their ongoing efforts include habitat management, conservation projects and maintaining the site’s unique character while balancing the needs of visitors and wildlife.
