Cannock Chase Council, working with St Luke’s Church in Cannock, has arranged a special service at the church in the town centre to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January.

The service will take place the day before, on Friday 26 January, in view of Saturday 27 January coinciding with the sabbath day within the Jewish community.

At its Council meeting last November, councillors unanimously supported a motion that included reiterating `its strong opposition to antisemitism, racism, and hatred in all its forms against Jewish people, emphasising our solidarity with Jewish people, both within our local community and across the world`.

As part of this it was agreed, from January 2024, to hold a memorial service in recognition of the annual Holocaust Memorial Day and to a light a candle as part of the service in memory of lives lost during the Holocaust. The Council, like other local authorities, has traditionally promoted the day working with the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.

Councillors also agreed to invite the local community, including members of the Jewish community and other associated groups, to participate in the service.

Everyone is therefore welcome to come along to St Luke’s Church, on Church Street in Cannock town centre next Friday. The short service will start at 10am and will be led by the Reverend Marie Meredith.

The Chairman of Cannock Chase Council, Councillor Alan Pearson, will be lighting the candle as part of the service.
