Cannock Chase Council are launching a pilot that will offer discounted car parking in Cannock and Rugeley.

The initiative will launch on 21 June and will provide shoppers to Cannock and Rugeley a discount on the cost of their car parking ticket when parking in Council owned car parks.

Shoppers will get a refund of £2 on the cost of their parking ticket if they spend £10 or more on goods/services in participating shops or hospitality businesses.  The shopper would receive the refund on presenting their car parking ticket or showing the text message/email receipt from the Pay by Phone service. The refund will apply to one transaction at a time.  A list of participating shops is available here: www.cannockchasedc.gov.uk/carparkingdiscount

Councillor Phil Hewitt, Portfolio Leader for Innovation and High Streets said “The Council has a priority to re-shape the town centres in the District.  This initiative will be trialled for 3 months to gauge the interest, but we hope that this pilot will encourage shoppers into Rugeley and Cannock, boost the footfall and help independent shops to recover from the effects of the pandemic and support their short term recovery.”

Businesses taking part in the initiative will receive £500 and would be asked to monitor the number of tickets refunded and submit weekly returns to the Council with feedback.  They would also be asked to display a sticker in their window to show customers they are participating.

The cost of the pilot scheme will be met from the allocation of Additional Restrictions Grant monies received from the Government.  As Hednesford already has free parking Officers will engage with Hednesford Town Council and local traders to identify suitable ideas to boost footfall for Hednesford Town Centre.

Following the trial period, the pilot will be evaluated by Officers and a report detailing uptake from businesses, numbers of refunds issued to customers, impact on car parking income, town centre trade etc. will be produced and presented to Cabinet for further consideration.
