The community allotments and building at the former Cannock Stadium Site are now complete, as part of the £1.3m redevelopment project.

The allotments consist of 14 large plots, with some that can be split and some raised beds and disabled planters.  The allotment building has access to electricity and water and is heated so could be used as a community room or classroom in the future.

The redevelopment of the former stadium site started in 2015, with two toddler and children’s play areas and multi-use games area (MUGA) in 2016, work is still ongoing and is set to complete summer 2018.

Councillor George Adamson, Leader of the Council said “In June 2012 the Council’s Cabinet welcomed the decision to remove the former Stadium site from the list of land available for housing development and to develop the site for use as public open space and sport and leisure purposes.

In November 2012 we consulted with residents and these new facilities prove that we listened. 85% of residents said they would like to see some form of sports provision available on site, 70% of those consulted wanted to see paths for walking dogs and cycling, 46% wanted to see car parking provision, over half (54%) said they wanted to see a Multi-Use Games Area, 57% wanted to see provision for children and young people, 46% wanted community/facility rooms and a further 7% allotments.

We have continued with this promise and to invest in our local community sport and recreation facilities and the completion of this facility together with the new BMX Pump Track and the two toddlers and children’s play areas and the multi-use games area completed in 2015 and 2016 truly demonstrates this commitment.

The community allotments and building will give the opportunity for us to work with community groups, voluntary groups and local schools.  This investment encourages us all to get more active and enjoy our public open spaces and parks.”

The remaining elements of phase 1 of the project will be completed over the next few months which includes; an adventure play area, illuminated path/cycle ways, car parking, CCTV and green gym equipment.

If there are any local community groups who are interested in getting involved in the allotment area, contact Sara Green, Consultation & Engagement Officer at Cannock Chase Council on 01543 464548.
