Scout Group has fun learning about food safety

Cannock Chase Council‘s Food and Safety Team has been engaging with community groups in the District to deliver bespoke food safety courses and food hygiene awareness sessions.  Both encompassing hands on practical learning and lots of FUN! 

Hygiene awareness sessions were delivered to a wide range of ages, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Leaders who are members of 1st Hednesford Scout Group.

Activities covered the importance of hygiene in the kitchen, how to store food safely in the fridge and how to wash hands properly. The handwashing proved to be a big hit!

Councillor Christine Martin, Portfolio Leader for Health and Wellbeing said “The practical food hygiene messages delivered by our officers have proven to have had a positive impact on communities in learning key messages to keep food safe.

“Working within the community with all age groups continues to be of importance to us in continuing to deliver these key messages” 

The course was put together by the Food and Safety team in collaboration with Lynn Evans from the Friends of Hednesford Park, Rob Ryder, leader of the Scout groups and the Food and Safety team from Environmental Health. It was designed as a practical and fun session to involve young people in our community to develop food hygiene knowledge and skills and making it fun in the process.

Andy Williams, Committee member from The Friends of Hednesford Park explained "We gained a Building Resilient Families and Communities fund through Staffordshire County Council. We had the food hygiene training from Cannock Chase Council’s Food and Safety Team a few years ago, the Scouts do a fabulous amount of work in our community, they will be able to put the training to such good use and pass on the key messages of storing food safely and washing your hands properly."

Rob Ryder leader of the 1st Hednesford Scout Groups said “The Scouts ever expanding links with the local community has recently presented the opportunity to work with Laura and the Environmental Health Team from Cannock Chase Council. The fun, informative and professional manner in which training and understanding of personal and food hygiene has been delivered to our Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Explorers and Leaders has been fantastic, the knowledge gained will serve our members well in their progression within scouting and also daily life. It is reassuring to have this type of resource available to support our volunteer leaders in delivering #skills for life”.
